Oakland Touchdown

The Oakland Touchdown (OTD) connects Interstate 80 in Oakland to the side-by-side decks of San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge’s new East Span. The project involved building two roadway sections and a new electrical substation. In addition, the project included extensive relocation of underground utilities.
AVS performed structural material source inspections and provided materials engineering. The firm also provided: AWS CWI services; ASNT NDT Level II services; PCI Level II services; metallurgical and welding engineering services; NACE-certified coating inspections; and claims support.
Challenges and Solutions
- AVS was extensively involved in resolving challenges surrounding reinforcing steel, splices, couplers, and epoxy coating. This effort successfully avoided schedule delays.
- With tireless and meticulous engineering and technician support, AVS helped resolve complex pre-cast concrete issues.
- AVS collaborated with fabricators and the Designer to resolve issues related to galvanizing on service platforms.
- AVS provided technical communication with the construction staff to find solutions to issues discovered during construction.
- AVS offered immediate inspection requests and coordination with manufacturers to keep project schedule on track.
