South/South-Detour
|
The South-South Detour is a temporary truss structure built to carry traffic while crews connect the new Self-Anchored Suspension Span to the Yerba Buena Tunnel. Completed over the 2009 Labor Day weekend, the detour includes five double-decker steel trusses that carry five lanes of traffic on each side. The work involved aerial construction 100 feet above Yerba Buena Island.
Alta Vista Solutions provided Quality Assurance (QA) inspection and Nondestructive Testing (NDT) services during fabrication and erection. AVS also provided technical expertise during the overseas fabrication and jobsite erection. Timely completion of source inspection activities played a vital role in the success of the West Tie-In Phase I deck replacement over Labor Day Weekend in 2007, as well as the East-Tie-In (ETI) truss rollout over Labor Day Weekend 2009.
Challenges and Solutions
- For the design-build portion where the designer worked for the contractor, AVS created a good working relationship with the contractor and fabricators, communicating clearly Caltrans’ requirements and proactively identifying and addressing issues. When the fabrication changed from China to Korea, AVS made sure fabricator understood design expectations and code requirements for AWS D1.5.
- During the West-Tie-In Phase I, AVS efficiently coordinated resources from Materials Engineering and Testing Services for the timely completion of this milestone.
- AVS was involved in the design phase of the ETI Skid Bents and Skid Beams, assisting in developing practical specifications and identifying areas of concern in advance. By developing good working relations with all parties including persons on the floor (shop superintendent, production manager, QC inspector, etc.), AVS helped effectively resolve day-to-day fabrication issues.
- AVS facilitated partnership and teamwork with all involved parties to complete the time-critical and parallel fabrication of the ETI truss. Coordinating and communicating all critical information in a timely manner to persons on the floor, AVS helped the fabricator resolve issues to meet the project schedule.
